14. LEGISLATURE AIMS FUNDS AT BULL TROUT

The Montana Legislature has passed a bill requiring the state to spend
$750,000 on restoring bull trout and cutthroat trout populations.

But lawmakers didn’t provide extra money to pay for the mandate, so
the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks officially opposed the bill.

The money must come from the department’s appropriated budget, which
was developed through a prioritization process and is funded largely through
the sale of hunting and fishing licenses.
